Healing through self-reflection

This morning, whilst I was reading some notes I took during last week’s sessions, the concept of ‘the inner child’ popped into my mind.

I thought about how we naturally tend to act like we did when we were children, even though we are no longer children.

For instance, we may instinctively feel fear when someone raises their voice, just like it happened when we were children.

We may feel uncomfortable showing affection if we were unintentionally taught that it’s not good to show it or if we didn’t receive much of it.

We may take on all the problems, even other people’s problems, forgetting to look after ourselves, believing that others always come first.

We may still feel ‘not good enough’ to achieve a goal, our dreams, or start something new because possibly, also our parents didn’t believe in themselves, and therefore, this is what we learnt to believe.

Because, after all, the inner child lives within us. We carry with us their smiles, their fears, their greatest desires, their needs, their questions, their insecurities. Their memories.

And it is up to us, now that we are adults, to take care of the inner child. To understand their needs, to acknowledge their feelings, to give them the answers they didn’t get, the reassurances and love…
